A Piece of Forest Lighting by Modern Times

Posted on April 20th, 2011 in Lighting

Johannes Tjernberg and Rasmus Malbert of Swedish Gothenburg-based design studio Modern Times created A Piece of Forest lighting installation.

A Piece of Forest – is one single pod. The pod has the ability to assemble into groups and grow, the hexagonal geometry allows it to repeat itself and cover a larger surface. In each pod hides one LED-module that gently shines on neighbouring pods and a glowing landscape spreads out. The light is coloured by the different coloured pods and affords character to the significant space. A Piece of Forest can be assembled into an asymmetrical or pendant luminaire.

The pod itself has its origin in the forest. It uses innovative DuraPulp technology developed by Södra Pulp Labs. DuraPulp is a composite consisting of a biologically degradable polylactic acid (PLA) and a selected wood pulp. When heated to approximately 170°C the PLA melts and encapsulates the pulp fibre. DuraPulp is a new material with unique properties, somewhere between paper and plastics.
