Fan Lamp by Louie Rigano

Industrial designer from New York Louie Rigano has created the Fan suspension lamp inspired by Japanese paper fans.

“Traditional folding fans are made of paper on a bamboo frame and were invented in Japan some time between the 6th and 8th century. This reinvention features the same construction and materials, but by introducing a single bend in the structure, an entirely new function is created. Washi paper is the customary material used in folding fans due to its strength and durability; it is also used in lanterns because it effectively diffuses light. Here, the paper is allowed to reach its maximum usefulness, as both these functions are utilized. Additionally, bamboo can be easily manipulated and bent with heat. The rubber cord is also heated and formed to match the curvature of the inner channel created when the bamboo segments of the lamp are extended.”
